I don’t believe I’ve seen a three-axle Barkas before, let along a long wheelbase Goliath passenger version like that. With them being painted similarly, I wonder what the story is? At any rate, the added weight must have that little Wartburg three absolutely wheezing.

The Land Rover’s one year too new to make for a good candidate to come to the US, let alone the grief they like to give people over Tdi/Td5 swaps, but the Mini - I’m shocked it isn’t much, much more with what the US market likes to charge.

Very drab cars nowadays with very chintzy interiors, but a unique style, and very, very reliable. It’s very nice for what it is, but realistically would be worth only a fraction that in the US. Parts availability somewhat less excellent in the EU as well...

Why’s a 29 year old LR a year too new? There was a 25 year restriction, right?
The Mini does need some work due to rust, but ‘drives, brakes and shifts right’. No idea of the extent of the rust as it isn’t visible in the pictures.

gib!

My brain isn’t working right - I thought 24 instead of 29. I must be getting old. Of course, the Rover’s fine. It might get a lot of scrutiny, but it’s fine.

Neat a Matra! Love those things.
Personally I’d love the one that came with the 2.2l Simca I4. Same one as used in 505 Turbos so I could swap some goodies and have a turbo 3-seater MR coupe :)
Also if that ‘sud was RHD I’d be on a plane to get it right now...

You’d be better off with a car with trailer for that Alfa. I don’t think it’s roadworthy as is. 935 km from London. It
is
less than 3 hours from me...

Zem Germans take good care of their cars. I love how they classify the Buick as a limousine. Great dump.

I was surprised as well, but later found out they just translate sedan into limousine.

If I had some money, any money, spare from the Spitfire I’d take you up on that offer :)
Car trailer would probably be the best bet, but at the start of every excellent story is a catastrophically bad idea ;)

Ha! This is true. I experienced something like that very close to where that Alfa is now. Actually, trouble started in the city (Hamburg) it’s in. I went to pick up my second E30 Touring a few dozen kilometers east of Hamburg, and on the way there my codriver molested the clutch of my 406 during a horrible hour+ first gear stop/go traffic jam in Hamburg to such an extent it was almost unable to continue further. That, and the problem with the E30 (running hot when idling) almost resulted in quite a catastrophic trip.

Interdasting! I saw that Barkas in 2009 in a vintage car mag. The story was that the guy restored the Tempo three wheeler to transport his vintage bikes but soon realized that it then was too slow to keep up with modern traffic. So he built the Barkas in matching colours to take the Tempo to meets.

as to the story, read my reply to duurtlang.

If that Defender was LHD you’d have a pretty long e-mail sitting in your inbox right now...

I do expect the price to go up a bit on that. It is an auction that won’t end in over 2 days. You can find LHD Defenders here though. Prices are all over the place, but won’t be nearly as cheap as that auction is now for a nice one.

Oh god... Anyone need a liver?
![]() 06/19/2015 at 16:51 |

I thought as much. That market is too well developed over here for too many good deals to go unnoticed. That might be high on my list when I take another stab, though, as they’re very popular in the Dallas, Austin, and Houston and the surrounding areas.

Great choices as always. I want them all. That 104 is adorable.

Well, considering the price, a slice of liver will do.

I remember reading about that :) quite the adventure :)

I’ve even come across ads looking for Defenders no newer than 1991, LHD and preferably the LWB 110 version. They didn’t specify, but I bet they’re shipped across the Atlantic immidiately. I did find a few LHD Defenders for prices that aren’t too extreme. Most of these are RHD, even here. And/or twice the price. I limited this to the Netherlands, but I bet it’s similar for Germany.
These are all LHD and from the 1980s:

These are all from the 80s, however that last does
look
too new. Its first registration was in 1984, but I don’t know if they rebuilt it with newer model year parts or swapped a VIN.

Well I could afford that.

The auction ended less than a day ago. It was sold for €5050 ($5650). Add a bit for shipping and handling (or airline tickets), and you could’ve had it in an Eastern US port for $8-9k.

Oh well.... :(

If this was in the Pacific Northwest in USA it would be worth 11,000 un-restored
